Full-bodied, powerful but mineral, this Pinot Noir has everything of a Grand Cru: strength, character, captivating aromas, complexity, length and above all harmony.
On the nose, aromas of ripe fruit (cherries, plums) enhanced with blood orange, all accompanied by spices of cinnamon, anise, ginger and earthy nuances.
This complexity is found on the palate which is wonderfully gourmand, on the fruit, balanced by the minerality and enriched with woody notes of cedar and tobacco.
A very great Pinot Noir that turns the head and the heart. I adore.
To be enjoyed with game, beef bourguignon or beef fillet with porcini mushrooms.

The 2020 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is spicy, savory and fine, with aromas of wild thyme and dried herbs, cherry, blood plum skin, white pepper, tobacco and brine. The wine is less supple than the Moonlight Race, which is immediately seductive and open, but it is much more complex and blossoms on the finish. This wine is long, complex and intriguing in its deployment of flavors. It is floral, but it has a sweet meaty character that remains on the periphery of the wine. There is raw cocoa and a hint of black tea on the finish. An exciting wine. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under a natural cork.

The 2020 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is not a wine I want to deconstruct into its components, because it embodies balance, harmony and fullness, and I want to drink a lot of it. This is a wine that is the sum of its parts rather than its individual elements. It is young and can be approached now, but deserves to be aged in bottle. It's full-bodied and suave, but being from Central Otago - deep in the earth, next stop penguins - it has a fresh, fresh feeling, enlivening its ensemble and retaining a sense of melodic direction among the gentle bass sections. There is a very small percentage of whole clusters (7%) which combine with the natural garrigue notes of Central Otago Pinot to provide a grassy touch alongside pure cherries and carefully judged oak.

t seems like an eternity ago I stood outside the original Burn Cottage Vineyard and gazed out at its verdant glory - it was early days, but damn, the wildlife, the flowers, the bees, the insects and the hairy staff (apart from Claire Mulholland), there was all that. And this is still the case today. I passed the Sauvage Vineyard today on my way to the base and was happy to see shaggy grasses and thriving vines. Anyway, here we go.
The wine is well wound and tight with fine, loamy tannins. The scent is a little muted, but that's okay: black cherry, a little minerality, new leather, kirsch and dark chocolate. The flavors are similar, but strongly mineral, with briny acidity, orange acidity, and a cool breeze of bergamot bitterness in the mix. Succulent as can be and quite refreshing. A beauty.
