The 2021 Vigno series of old vines was made from a blend of Carignan and 15% other grapes: Malbec, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon from the La Aguada vineyard in Sauzal on granitic alluvial soils. The destemmed grapes were fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and aged in neutral barrels for nine months, after which 85% of the volume was transferred to a 2,500 liter oak cask to complete a total aging of 11 months. It is 13.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.33 with 6.81 grams of acidity. It's a cold year, and the wine is balsamic and slightly minty, with notes of camphor. This wine was not produced in 2020, and in 2021, we opted for a fresher wine with a little less alcohol; the wine is more austere, fine and elegant, a little paler, more subtle than previous vintages. More elegant but less varietal? 3,770 bottles were filled in December 2022.

Vigno is a group of producers whose mission is to recover and promote the old Carignans of the Maule Valley, in particular those that come from dry-cultivated vineyards. This Vigno is very much in tune with the new face of Chilean Carignan - it is much fresher and more delicate, with less extraction and less oak. There is delicacy and red fruit here, and the oak is not noticeable (it was aged in casks for 11 months). The acidity is energetic and the sensation of freshness is maintained until the end in a wine that speaks of the grape variety, but in a more subtle way.

Black cherries and pomegranate are accompanied by a nice mineral note. Fresh herbs, black earth and blueberries. The medium-bodied palate is very elegant and agile, with wonderful tension and sparkle. A very nice VIGNO. Drink now or keep.
